Message From the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back everyone and a most happy and healthy new year to you. Our first week back is progressing very well as students settle into the structure of the school day. As you know we had water damage in the parish center in December. Presently, the extended care area restoration is being completed and will be done later this week. Thank you for your patience.

We have several parent and family social events occurring this week. Parents are invited to our monthly coffee and doughnut social this Friday, January 9th, after morning assembly in the Parish Center. This Sunday we will have our annual Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfast from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM in the Parish Center. Tickets were sent home prior to Christmas break. They can be purchased at the door for $5.00 per person. Funds raised will benefit our technology program. On Monday, January 12th, the Men’s Club will be hosting their annual Chili Cook-Off. Please see enclosed information flyer. You are invited to our January 15th Mass in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. It will be at 11:00 AM.

Financial Assistance Application

Families who are interested in applying for financial aid please go to our school website www.st-dunstan.org and link to Admissions/Tuition Assistance. Complete the procedures for applying for financial aid by April 15, 2015. Please contact school bookkeeper Louise Cordova if you have any questions.

Box Top Donation Check

Thank you for your weekly box top donations. Over the break we received a check for $485.00 from the Box Top for Education Fund. We are grateful to coordinator Irma Custodio for her efforts. Funds collected help support our extracurricular programs including Art in Action and Musical Theatre.

Kindergarten Testing for 2015-16

Testing is scheduled for Saturday, January 31 at 9:00 pm.

Testing is by appointment only. Applicants must be turning 5 years old before September 1.

Transfer Students Testing for 2015-16

Testing for transfer applicants will be Monday, February 2 starting at 3:00 PM. Testing is by appointment only.

Open House Sunday, January 25th

We have Mass at 10:00 AM followed by Open House starting at 11:00 PM. Share this date with prospective families and invite them to come. You are our best advertisement.

Technology Update

In celebration of Computer Science Education Week (December 8-14,), St. Dunstan students participated in the Hour of Code. This week-long, global initiative is designed to give students a one-hour introduction to basic computer programming.
The 8th Grade Students are wrapping up their poverty iMovie videos, which will be uploaded to their Spiritual Biographies and presented in class. Their final projects are a culmination of several weeks of research and time spent learning iMovie.  7th grade students in Mrs. Calaunan’s math class have been working with Educreations to create instructional math videos on the iPad. The Raz-Kids program, an educational reading app on the iPad, will start with the first grade class.  The rest of the primary grades will follow as soon as we get the id’s and passwords.

Blackberry Farm – June 11

Blackberry Farm will be scheduled for Thursday, June 11. It is the only date available suitable to our school needs. Kindergarten graduation will be moved to Wednesday, June 10. Please note the adjusted schedule for the last week of school. These changes will be noted on our website calendar.

Friday Coffee and Doughnut Social – January 9

At the Advisory Board meeting, it has been decided that the Friday coffee and doughnut social will be every first Friday of the month. There is no agenda.  Just come by after assembly to the Parish Center to enjoy a cup of coffee before you go to work or run your errands.  All are welcome.

Friday Hot Lunch

January 9, 2015 Hot lunch supports the eighth grade class.  There will be a bake sale to support the eighth grade class in the Parish Center.

January 16, 2015 Hot lunch supports the school funds.

January 23, 2015 Hot lunch supports the activities for the TERESA committee.

Please remember to bring a lunch in the morning if you have not purchased a hot lunch.  Please see the 2014-2015 for clarification.  Reminder – You must submit an order form for Friday lunches. Order forms cannot be written on pieces of paper.  Please do not combine checks for multiple Friday lunches. The money goes to different sponsors and cannot be included in the same check.

Pancake Breakfast – January 11
Save-the-Date for our First Annual Pancake Breakfast at St. Dunstan School on Sunday, January 11, 2015.  The Millbrae Lion’s Club have generously donated their time and services towards helping our school raise much needed funds to support our technology program and to purchase permanent awnings in the south yard.  Millbrae Leo’s Club will also be on-hand to help serve and clean-up after the event.  All we need is your support.  For each family in our school, please consider purchasing a book of tickets for this event.
The breakfast includes all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausages, coffee and/or juice.  Tickets are $5 each.  Friends and family are welcome.  Please return your payment the week of January 5, 2015.  Additional tickets are available at the school’s office. Thank you for your support.

K-3 Fall Intramural Announcement:

Intramural Basketball will begin the week of January 12, 2015. All practices meet from 5:45-6:45 in the Parish Center.

K & 1st Grade Boys will be held on Tuesdays

2nd & 3rd Grade Boys will be held on Wednesdays
ALL Girls will meet on Monday, January 12th. Beginning the week of January 26th, the following schedule will be followed:
K & 1 Girls will be held on Mondays 
2nd & 3rd Grade Girls will be held on Thursdays

Spark of Creation Presents – The Little Mermaid Jr.

Please come to our upcoming production of The Little Mermaid Jr. There are 6 students from St. Dunstan (grades 1-3) who will be participating in the show and are a part of cast #1.  The show will be held on January 17-18 at the Skyline College Theater in San Bruno.  Tickets are $15 and  are available for purchase via brownpapertickets.com.  We would love to invite the St. Dunstan community to come and support all of the talented youth performers  who will be featured in this show!

Men’s Club Chili Cook-Off
Greetings, the St. Dunstan Men’s Club is pleased to invite you to the 5th Annual Chili Cook-Off dinner event Monday, January 12 at 6:30 PM in the Parish Center.  Please RSVP by Sunday, January 11 either by notifying us on Facebook (HTTPS://www.facebook.com/groups/mensclubsd/) or e-mailing both Anton Bader (creativeponds@gmail.com) and Tony Fabbi (tfabbi@yahoo.com).  Guests are always welcome!

Chilli Contest Rules
  1. Chili is to be prepared & cooked ahead of time and will be reheated in the St. Dunstan Parish Center (kitchen facilities and power outlets will be available)
  2. Chili entrants are to arrive at the Parish Center no later than 6:45 PM
  3. Bring enough chili for 25-30 people to sample
  4. Chili condiments will be supplied by the Men’s Club (e.g. grated cheese, chopped onions, sweet peppers, sour cream)
  5. Appetizers, coleslaw, cornbread and dessert will be provided by Men’s Club
  6. An alternative entree will be available for non-chili eating attendees
  7. The winner will be determined by popular vote
  8. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards will be presented
  9. In the case of a tie, an informal yet sophisticated applause meter will be invoked as a tie-breaker tool.

We hope you can all join us for a chilicious evening filled with great food, drinks and raffle prizes!

Art in Action

Welcome back!  I hope all of you had a fantastic summer!  Are you ready for Art in Action?  This is such a fun way to get involved in your child’s class.  Without parent volunteers, our Art in Action program would not be a success.

AIA-Docents & Helpers list 2014-2015

For each grade, I need 1 – 2 docents and about 3 classroom helpers.  The docent is the volunteer who leads the initial discussion about a piece of art and then the docent guides the kids through creating their own artwork, step by step. Some parents double up and share the docent role.

Art in Action publishes a series of books, grade by grade. They provide detailed, recipe-style directions for guiding successful discussions and projects, while still allowing the flexibility to ensure that each project will complement any classroom environment.

The online tools, in addition, are terrific. You’ll find step-by-step guidance through video tutorials, discussion points, other lesson-planning resources, and more.

You need to create an an Art in Action account first, before you can access the videos, lesson plans, along with all the other helpful tools. Please let me know if you need one.

In previous years, St. Dunstan School receives generous donations from families and parishioners. We have received donations for our technology fund, athletics, art-in-action, safety upgrades (video cameras and walkie-talkies), improvements (like new carpet and tents) and scholarship for needy families.

This year, we would like to purchase additional iPads, expand our bandwidth and buy a new slide for the playground as well as an awning structure in the South Yard. Our goal is to increase donations by tapping FREE money sources. One of which is the Company Gift and Volunteer Matching Programs. These charitable giving programs are set up by corporations in which the company matches employee donations (monetary and some companies even match volunteer hours!) to eligible nonprofit organizations like St. Dunstan School. Each company has its own guidelines that may be discussed with HR or check company’s website. Some companies may have employees choose to donate to particular funds (ex. technology, playground, etc) or general funds (school will choose a particular area to use the donation). Other companies provide matching for retirees as well. For example, if a grandparent worked for PG&E, their donations are also eligible for matching gifts, too.

A limited list of companies that offer these programs is attached. Please let us know if your company has a matching program and is not in our list. We will update the list accordingly. If St. Dunstan School is not on your company-giving list, you can make a request to add our school to the list. You may contact St. Dunstan office if you need additional information. Note that there’s a time period for Community Giving Campaigns for some organizations. PG&E’s campaign is from September through October 31 and Kaiser is from November 1 – 30 while other companies are year round.

Let’s take advantage of this opportunity! If 20 families agree to donate $500 each with company matching program, we double the amount from $10000 to $20000 almost instantaneously.Let’s make

We had a wonderful performance at the Tanforan Mall on past Friday evening. Many students from K-4th grades came with their parents to support and performaned beautifully. In addition, our beautiful cheerleaders came and showed everyone their talents. Special thanks to our St. Dunstan alumini Alyssa Mercado and Alexandria Saenz who helped choreographed this year’s holiday cheer. Lastly, a huge THANK YOU to Ms. Lafon and Ms. Saenz.  Our performance would not be possible without their support!!

Welcome back to school! I’m thrilled to be the Box Tops for Education Coordinator for St. Dunstan School. Box Tops is such an easy way for parents to get involved in their child’s education. Just by purchasing Box Tops products, clipping the coupons and sending them into school, we earn cash that can be used to buy anything we need. You can find Box Tops on thousands of your favorite products, from Big G cereals to Avery office supplies to Hanes T-shirts to Boise printer paper.

Last year we earned $596.60! This year we are hoping to earn $1000! To learn more and track our school’s progress, log in at BoxTops4Education.com (BTFE.com). Please print out some of the collection sheets online. They are easy to use and lots of fun for the kids.

Labels for Education

St-Dunstan has participated in “Labels for Education” program since year 2000. “Labels for Education” has been awarding free educational equipment/supplies to schools in exchange for proofs of purchase from Campbell’s family of brands, Pepperidge Farm selected products, Prego, Swanson….etc. Below is the link for participating products: http://www.labelsforeducation.com/Earn-Points/Participating-Products. Please look for the UPC of “Labels for Education” on the product package, cut and bring it to school. It will allow us earn points and redeem whatever our school front office. We want to say big “Thank you” for those parents and students for turning in your UPC labels at the end of last school year. Let’s all continue to look out, cut and collect these labels.  To help us, we are offered the September 2014 special bonus point offers from them. If you have the UPC of Labels for Education for Campbell and Pepperidge Farm, kindly submit by September 30, 2014 to front office. Please put the UPC in an envelope or zip lock bag with your child grade. At the end of school year, we will have an ice cream party for the top label for education earning point class. He Has Been Tempted as We Are

How many difficulties are present in the life of every individual, amount our people, in our communities; yet as great as these may seem, God never allows us to be overwhelmed by them.  In the face of those moments of discouragement we experience in life, in our efforts to evangelize or to embody our faith as parents within the family, I would like to say forcefully:  Always know in your heart that God is by your side; he never abandons you!

Let us never lose hope! Let us never allow it to die in our hearts!

Reflection: Where do you feel overwhelmed or discourages?  Scripture says that “we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sinning” (Hebrew 4:15). Talk to Jesus about the challenges you face, knowing that he went through many trials himself.
