February 15, 2017
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We hope you all enjoyed a nice Valentine’s day with your families. The students had a fun day and definitely enjoyed Mr. Sato’s chance to kiss the frog at assembly! As a reminder, the school will be closed over the mid-winter break, February 20-24. We return back to school on Monday, February 27th. Keep in mind, Monday the 27th is a professional development afternoon session for faculty and will be a minimum day, 12:00 PM dismissal to allow the teachers to travel off campus for a workshop.
Senator Jerry Hill Visit
At 2:00 pm this Friday, February 17, State Senator Jerry Hill will be addressing the students in grades 4-8 in the Parish Center. We are honored to have him join our community for the afternoon and would like to thank Mr. Qua for facilitating this event. Parents and guests are welcome to join us. Responsible Citizenship is a key school wide learning expectation for our students. Senator Hill will be addressing this theme as well as his work in the legislature to support schools, environmental protection and future developments in state government. There will be a question and answer period. Our 8th grade class will be traveling to Sacramento in early March to visit our state capital. This will be an excellent precursor to their annual trip.
Congratulations, Sabrina Mendoza, class of 2009, for placing first in shot put at the University of Washington indoor track and field event for University of Hawaii. Go the link below to ready about Sabrina’s win and check out her outstanding bio!
We would like to thank all of the parents that have contributed to the anonymous Parent Survey thus far. Your answers have been honest, thoughtful and informative. We recognize there are some areas of strength and some challenges and we will be addressing those in the weeks and months to come. For those of you who have not yet had the chance to complete the survey, please take a few minutes to do so. The survey will be closed on Friday at 8:00 am so that we can compile the results and begin some strategic conversations.
Tuition Payment Contract
At this time of year we post the 2017-18 Tuition Payment Contract. Please complete this form and return it by Monday, February 27. The tuition increase will be 3% and the athletic fee will be raised by an additional $25.00. The athletic fee has been included in the tuition. The annual registration fee remains the same, which is also included in the tuition. The school office will be closed during mid-winter break (February 20-24). School correspondence during that period can be turned into the rectory mail slot at 1133 Broadway. You only need to sign the form. No check is needed at this time. Note: for two parent families two signatures are required.
Coco Needs a Home for Spring Break
Coco needs a home for spring break. If you are interested, please notify Ms. Muller with a letter that you can take Coco home. Ms. Muller will provide the food and needs for Coco for the break.
Preschool Planning Proposal
Some of you may have seen the sign posted at the front of the school announcing the public hearing to approve the St. Dunstan Preschool Proposal. We anticipate that there may be questions about the proposed Preschool and what this meeting entails. This meeting is for the City of Millbrae to approve the architectural drawings and physical plans to add a Preschool to our campus facility and issue a Certified Use Permit to operate. Fr. Brendan and the architect will attend this meeting on behalf of St. Dunstan. Should you have questions or concerns prior to the meeting, please reach out to me personally.
If the plans are approved by the City, we will host a Town Hall Meeting in the near future to discuss how the preschool will be implemented into the current facility and the benefits and impacts it will have on the overall program and campus facility. There is a demonstrated need for preschools in the immediate area, as stated in a study by the Office of Education for San Mateo County. In the coming years, they anticipate a need for 10,000 additional spaces. There are currently 22 Catholic Preschools in the Archdiocese Catholic School System and we feel that St. Dunstan could further the mission of the school and build a healthy enrollment funnel by adding this valuable program to our school. We recognize that there are some physical improvements, both minor and major, with other areas of the campus and we would like to address those as well. In particular, the play structure.

Through the Year with Pope Francis: Daily Reflections
God Accompanies Us
Ask yourselves: “How much space do I give to the Lord? Do I stop to talk with him?” Ever since we were children, our parents have taught us to start and the end of the day with prayer, to teach us to feel that the friendship and the love of God accompanies us. Let us remember the Lord more in our daily life!
-General Audience, May 1, 2013
Reflection: Try to recall the presence of God in your life throughout the day, and say a short prayer when you do. See if you are able to do this at least three times today.
